The CARIFREE cavity prevention program Simple as 1...2...3How tooth decay happens:
All teeth are covered with a thin, invisible coating called a biofilm, which is made up of healthy and acidic bacteria. Acidic bacteria produce acids that penetrate
and dissolve the tooth structure, and an overpopulation of these bacteria
can eventually lead to tooth decay (cavities).
When acidic conditions (low pH) in the mouth are frequent, intense, or long lasting, acid-producing bacteria begin to overpopulate. Preventing long episodes of acidic conditions
in the mouth is fundamental to maintaining a healthy bacterial population on the teeth.
- What types of bacteria are on your teeth?
The CariFree testing and treatment program will help Dr. Sue and the Smile Team identify your bacterial population type and restore oral health.
- CariFree Caries (Cavity) Risk Assessment Form
Just as a physician reviews a patient's risk for heart disease by assessing diet, exercise habits, and blood pressure, Dr. Sue and the Smile Team will review lifestyle habits, dental hygiene, and other risk factors for cavities. This questionnaire covers such risk factors as diet, dental home care, saliva flow, medications, bacterial population, and dental history to identify specific risk factors for cavities in your special situation.
- One-Minute CariScreen Caries Susceptibility Test
Simple, painless and inexpensive one-minute CariScreen test is performed. This test provides us with vital information regarding the bacteria levels in the biofilm.
- Assessment Results
Patients identified as high or moderate caries (cavities) risk will be presented with
a treatment plan designed to restore oral health using prescription mouth rinses to decrease the acidity of the oral environment and create a healthy pH. We make your mouth unfriendly to bacteria.
